Do the lessons use a mix of instructional approaches?

Big Ideas Math incorporates a variety of instructional approaches. Students regularly use verbal models and manipulatives. In fact, there is an entire section of the online Math Tool Paper devoted to manipulatives for students to use. Through Desmos and GeoGebra interactive explorations, students are even exposed to technological resources to help them in understanding the mathematics.

Teachers are encouraged to ask a broad range of questions in Laurie’s Notes. Laurie incorporates formative assessment throughout each lesson, whether it is a simple question to ask of the students to discuss independently, in pairs, or small groups, or suggestions for closure to assess students’ understanding of the lesson. Two of Laurie’s favorite techniques are Turn and Talk and Think-Pair-Share. Laurie uses these techniques several times throughout each chapter, encouraging students to openly communicate about the mathematics.
